A letter from G. Michael Brandt, Chief of the Asbestos and Lead Section of the Illinois Department of Public Health, to Greg St. Aubin, IR Governmental Affairs Director, said that the federal lead paint pamphlet will now satisfy the requirements of distribution of a lead paint brochure. Here are excerpts from that letter: "I have reviewed the federal pamphlet and have determined that it is more comprehensive than the Illinois pamphlet. The Illinois Lead Poisoning Prevention Act, 410 ILCS 45.9.1, Owners obligation to give notice, requires that all owners of residential buildings or dwelling units built before 1978 shall give notice, requires that all owners or residential health hazards posed by lead. The Act further states that the owner provide a copy of an informational brochure prepared by the Department. The Department assisted in preparing the federal pamphlet and now produces those pamphlets from negatives supplied to us by the US EPA. In view of the similar requirement of the tow acts, the Department will accept the federal pamphlet by used in lieu of the 'Renter's Guide' to meet the requirement set forth under the aforementioned state act."
